Image compression is the application of data compression in digital images. Image compression can be lossy or lossless. This document attempts to implement basic JPEG compression using only basic MATLAB functions. In this work, lossy compression techniques have been used, where data loss can not affect the clarity of the image in this area. Image compression solves the problem of reducing the amount of data needed to represent a digital image. It is also used to reduce redundancy which is no more than avoiding duplicate data. It also reduces the storage area to load an image. For this we are using JPEG. JPEG is a fixed frame compression standard, which is based on Discrete Cosine Transformation and is also suitable for most compression applications. The discrete cosine transform (DCT) is a mathematical function that transforms data from digital images of the spatial domain into the frequency domain.

Compression of an image is significantly different from compression of raw binary data. Of course, general-purpose compression programs can be used to compress images, but the result is less than optimal. DCT has been widely used in the processing of the image signal. The one-dimensional DCT is useful in processing one-dimensional signals such as speech waveforms. For the analysis of two-dimensional (2D) signals such as images, we need a 2D version of the DCT data, especially in compression coding, for near optimum performance. JPEG is a compression method commonly used for photographic images. The JPEG name represents Joint Photographic Experts Group, the name of the committee that created the standard. JPEG provides compression with loss of images. Image compression is the application of data compression in digital images. Indeed, the aim is to reduce the redundancy of the image data in order to be able to efficiently store or transmit data. The best image quality at a given bit rate (or compression ratio) is the main objective of image compression. The main objectives of this document are: Reduce the storage space of images, Easy maintenance and provide security, Data loss can not affect the clarity of the image, Lower bandwidth requirements for transmission, Reduction of costs.
